Abstract:
The European NeT collaborative network aims to provide experimental and numerical standards for residual stresses prediction and measurement in welded structures. This is done through several studies involving experimental mock-ups manufactured by the network partners and their numerical simulations performed with different Finite Element codes, such as code_aster, Abaqus or SYSWELD. One of these benchmarks is the Task Group 6 (TG6), a nickel-based alloy specimen consisting of an Alloy 600 plate with a slot filled by three Alloy 82 beads.
In this work, a new TG6 simulation is presented. The TIG welding fabrication process is modeled as a weakly-coupled non-linear thermo-mechanical problem. The heat transfer problem has been calibrated using the data from 9 manufactured plates that were instrumented with 12 thermocouples. Each pass is calibrated individually using state of the art multi-objective optimization. The results are compared to a macrograph of the fusion zone after the 3 passes.
The mechanical behavior is modeled using a Lemaitre-Chaboche visco-elasto-plastic formulation, following Akrivos’ material characterization work in [1]. The numerical results are compared to several neutron diffraction residual stress measurements and show good agreement between them.
