154119 - Highlights of Revisions to Reference Codes in the 2025 Edition of Bpvc
Abstract:
INTRODUCTION
There have been many revisions to Section II, Parts A (Ferrous Material Specifications – provided in two volumes) [II-A] and B (Nonferrous Material Specifications) [II-B]; Section II, Part D (materials’ Properties – provided in two volumes, one for US Customary [ksi, °F] units and one for Metric [MPa, °C] units) [II-D]; Section V (Nondestructive Examination) [V], and Section IX (Qualification Standard for Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Procedures; Welders; Brazers; and Welding, Brazing, and Fusing Operators) [IX] published in the 2025 Edition. This paper addresses the latest major changes in those reference Codes.
SCOPE
Every two years, a new Edition of the thirteen Sections of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is published. Historically, in this 2-year period, over 1,000 Revisions are made among the entire set of Code books. This paper is solely addressing the reference Codes – the Codes that are referenced by the construction Codes; specifically II-A and II-B, II-D, V, and IX. There is also a Section II, Part C (Specifications for Welding Rods, Electrodes, and Filler Metals) [II-C] that is outside the scope of this paper. Also excluded are standards that are referenced but not within the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, such as B16.5.
HIGHLIGHTS OF CODE REVISIONS
In the 2025 Edition, there are several major editorial and technical revisions to the Codes within the scope of this paper. Examples of such revisions are:
· II-A & II-B – many specifications have been significantly updated
· II-D – N08xxx materials are moving from SB to SA specifications, many Code Cases are incorporated, many data values are revised, many additional data are added, and several technical initiatives are making progress
· V – many standards have been updated, an inservice NDE subsection is added
· IX – many new materials have been assigned P-Numbers, and many standard welding procedures have been updated
For the technical revisions, this paper will also explore the substantiation of the revisions.
