152530 - External Pressure Evaluation for Hot Taps 

Abstract: 

A review of Article 216 in ASME PCC-2 Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping led to some changes proposed in the wording within the Article. Specifically, clause 3.13(b)(2) which deals with external evaluation of set-on hot taps. This paper describes the basis of the external pressure evaluation as originally published in 2016 as well as changes which are proposed for the 2026 edition. In addition, comparison is made to the method using Finite Element Analysis.

Presenting Author: Christopher Oliver Chevron

Presenting Author Biography: Chris Oliver is a mechanical engineer with experience working at a refinery. He is currently working for Chevron’s Technical Center. CTC can be thought of as Chevron’s internal consulting firm and is charged with providing engineering support and development throughout the corporation and affiliates.

Chris focuses on pressure vessel design and analysis and post-construction repairs. He is a member of the ASME Post Construction Committee and Vice-Chair of that committee’s Subgroup Mechanical Repairs which has the primary responsibility of developing and maintaining Part 3 of ASME PCC-2, Repair of Pressure Equipment and Piping.
