107140 - Simulation of PA-UT Sector Scanning Imaging of Irregular Defects in Polyethylene Pipe Based on Finite Element Analysis
Phased array ultrasonic testing (PA-UT) is the most commonly used nondestructive testing technology for polyethylene pipe because of its high accuracy and wide application. It is necessary to obtain the size, location and quantity of defects in pipe joints in the safety assessment. However, due to the imaging principle, acoustic attenuation, acoustic dispersion and other reasons, PA-UT images will be distorted, especially in the sector scanning, which makes the detection results unable to show the true shape of defects. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the detection results. The reconstruction method needs to be based on a large number of defect image samples. PA-UT detection on test blocks is usually based on regular void defects, but finite element simulation can simulate irregular defects of any shape, so as to provide a large number of samples for defect reconstruction. In this paper, based on finite element simulation and ultrasonic imaging technology, the finite element simulation of irregular ellipse defects of polyethylene pipe was carried out. The influence of acoustic attenuation and dispersion on ultrasonic detection was considered in the simulation. The simulation results of elliptic defects were obtained by sector scanning under different detection parameters. At the same time, a test block containing the same defects was made in the laboratory and PA-UT detection was carried out. The simulation results were compared with the actual test results in terms of imaging features and size features, and the validity of the finite element simulation was verified.
