107189 - Review on Hydrogen-Induce Failure of Rubber O-Rings for High Pressure Hydrogen Storage Tanks
Hydrogen is an energy carrier of concern at present. Hydrogen is prone to leakage, and the explosion risk after hydrogen leakage is high due to the low ignition temperature and large combustion and explosion range (4%~74%). Therefore, the sealing function of high-pressure hydrogen systems is really important for the safe use of hydrogen. Rubber O-ring is an important seal component in high-pressure hydrogen systems. In order to determine the hydrogen leakage of rubber O-ring under service conditions, relevant devices have been developed internationally. This paper introduced the applications and requirements for the use of rubber O-rings in the static sealing equipments of high-pressure hydrogen systems. Meanwhile the paper described the leakage principles of rubber O-rings in high-pressure hydrogen, including the principle of permeating leakage and the principle of interface leakage. Hydrogen leakage detection methods were then introduced and compared, such as pressure drop method, water pressure method, mass spectrometry leak detection method, etc. In addition, the leakage testing devices were further investigated for the existing high-pressure hydrogen permeation testing devices for rubber materials and high-pressure hydrogen leakage testing devices for rubber O-rings, mainly including devices functions, test condition control methods, applied leakage detection principles and methods, and leakage detection accuracy .
