106140 - High Temperature Performance Comparison of Spiral-Wound and Kammprofile Gaskets
Both spiral-wound and kammprofile gaskets are used extensively in various applications such as refineries, petrochemical plants, power plants etc. In recent years, the use of kammprofile gaskets have seemed to gain momentum over the conventional spiral-wound gaskets, since they tend to provide better sealing performance and longer service life. However, it is difficult for engineers to decide which gasket to use, due to the lack of comprehensive comparisons of two gaskets performance especially high temperature performance. In this paper, high temperature mechanical properties tests are carried out by using the high temperature comprehensive performance test device, and the compression resilience curve, creep curve and resilience modulus of two types of gaskets at different test temperatures are compared. Furthermore, the high temperature sealing performance test of two types of gaskets are studied by using a NPS3 bolted flanged joint. The effects of different temperature, gasket surface pressure and thermal cycle conditions on the bolt stress relaxation and sealing performance of bolted flange joint with two gaskets are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the two types of gaskets are summarized and their applicable working conditions are given. This study can provide a guidance for proper gasket selection of spiral-wound and kammprofile gaskets.
