62132 - A Comprehensive Review on Failure Analysis of Electrofusion Joint For Plastic Pipes
Electrofusion (EF) joint plays an important role in connecting plastic pipes or plastic composite pipes, due to its easy installation and high safety. Many researchers focused on the failure behavior and fracture analysis of EF joints when subjected to different loading condition, such as internal pressure, impact load, bending load and fatigue load. Meanwhile, influence of time-dependence, temperature-dependence and joint defects are all considered for failure analysis, which will contribute different failure modes in the same loading condition. In this study, the failure modes of EF joint for polyethylene pipes as well as composite pipes are reviewed. Leak failure, pull-out failure, ductile failure and brittle failure are common failure modes for EF joint under different loading conditions. The failure mechanisms related to each failure modes are discussed in detail. The presented study has a twofold purpose. To provide an all-encompassing review of current research in the area of EF joints failure modes and fracture analysis, as well as presenting cases of failure behavior when EF joints are in service, in which the joints are under different loading condition. And to propose a failure risk evaluation and optimization method for the design of EF joints in different service conditions based on the failure analysis.
