62961 - Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger Core Experiments Under Tension and Pressure Loading
Department of Energy intends to advance the printed circuit heat exchangers design of next generation power plants (NGNPs). At present, there are no PCHE design code rules for NGNPs. The gap analysis of the current ASME Section III, Division 5 suggests the need to develop the hydrostatic test requirements, acceptable strains in the channels, and establish the PCHE design core's failure modes. Working towards these gaps, mechanical performance, and failure mode evaluations of PCHE are essential. This study is a part of the department of energy integrated research project to develop the PCHE design for NGNP. Initial works on this project have established the mechanical and material properties of diffusion bonded 800H at elevated temperatures and proposed respective allowable stresses of diffusion bonded Alloy 800H. This study designed two types of PCEH core specimens as per the ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1 rules. The first type is the channeled tension specimens with three rows and three columns of channels. Tension tests on these flat channeled specimens at different temperatures will evaluate the mechanical performance and failure mechanisms of Alloy 800H diffusion bonded channels. The second specimen type consists of a PCHE core with six rows and eight columns of channels. A hydrostatic pressure burst test will be performed to evaluate the structural integrity of PCHE and provide a baseline for comparison purposes. A series of pressure creep and pressure creep-fatigue tests are in progress, which will evaluate the failure mechanism and evaluate the PCHE design. The test results will be evaluated against the failure mode effect analysis to establish the failure mode in PCHE with respective load cycles.
