123027 - Damage Assessment of Liquid Nitrogen Cycling on Type ⅲ Pressure Vessel in Cryo-Compressed Hydrogen Storage Cylinder
Cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2) storage is a novel on-board hydrogen storage technique. It possesses a higher hydrogen storage density and prolonged dormancy periods. Insulated pressure vessel is the primary component for on-board CcH2 storage, where the inner Type III pressure vessel is directly contacted with hydrogen. However, the stored CcH2 with extreme low temperature and high pressure conditions can potentially lead to damage and failure of the composite layer. In current literature, the influence of high pressure on composite layer was well-understood, while the effects of low temperature remain less explored. In this study, a CcH2 storage cylinder with storage volume of 55L was manufactured. The cylinder was then subjected to 1, 10, and 100 low temperature cycles using liquid nitrogen to simulate the actual filling process of CcH2. The damage of the composite layer during and after the cycle was evaluated by CT scan, ultrasonic phased array, and acoustic emission techniques. Subsequently, a room-temperature hydrostatic test was conducted on the cylinder after each low temperature cycles to check its residual pressure-bearing capacity. Therefore, this study clarified the damage mechanism of low temperature on Type III pressure vessel, and set the stage for the studies of low temperate bearing capacity of the CcH2 storage cylinder.
