125010 - Technical Basis for Proposed Asme Section Xi Code Case on Evaluation Requirements for a Static Over-Pressure Event in Class 2 or 3 Piping System
This paper presents the technical basis for a proposed ASME Section XI Code Case on evaluation requirements for a static over-pressure event that occurred in a Class 2 or 3 metallic piping system. Section III currently prescribes pressure limits of pipe for Service Levels B, C, and D for events that exceed the allowable working pressure calculated by Section III NCD-3640 Eq. (5). Section III acknowledges its potential consequences for continued operation of the pipe system in the definition of each service level, but does not provide guidance on how to evaluate the potential consequences. Of particular interest is pressure excursions that require the Owner to utilize Service Level C or D permissible pressure limits since those service levels allow for large, permanent deformations. This Code Case provides actions and criteria that may be used to assure a piping system has adequate structural integrity to return to service after the piping system has undergone a static over-pressure event. For the purpose of specifying the evaluation requirements, a static over-pressure event is classified as either a non-exceedance event or an exceedance event, depending on the magnitude of the maximum pressure that occurred during the over-pressure event. The proposed Code Case addresses a maximum pressure up to the ASME III Level D pressure limit. Pressure higher than Level D is planned for future revisions to the Code Case.
