124195 - Eprg Full Scale Fatigue Crack Growth and Fracture Test on a Modern Linepipe in High Pressure Hydrogen Gas
EPRG (European Pipeline Research Group) is performing full scale fatigue crack growth and fracture testing in high pressure hydrogen gas on a 28” OD X70 modern LSAW welded pipe. The test vessel also contains normal (250 HVN) and high hardness (300 HVN) girth welds. The vessel is seeded with EDM notches and weld flaws. The aims of the test are to assess the effect of hardness on fatigue crack growth and fracture, compare the small scale laboratory testing with full scale behaviour under cyclic pressure and compare the modern with vintage materials (future test scope).
Several notches have established fatigue crack growth and some have reached point of failure. An suspect crack instability behaviour was also observed at a moderate pipeline utilisation pressure level.
The test is providing ground-breaking insights in the behaviour of a modern linepipe material intended for use in gaseous hydrogen service. The current understandings will be challenged and more work will be needed as a result to enable safe operation of future hydrogen gas transmission grid.
The results of the full scale test will be presented and discussed in the context of the project objectives and compared with the small scale test data predictions to inform material qualifcation requirements and the integrity management strategies for hydrogen pipelines.
