106224 - The Relationship between the Change in the Properties of Rubber Materials and the Failure of O-rings exposed to High-Pressure Hydrogen
Various tests such as crosslink density, permeability, and mechanical properties were performed on NBR vulcanizates with multiple fillers and different contents, and rapid gas decompression test (RGD) was performed for NBR O-ring to evaluate their resistance against the high-pressure hydrogen. Also, the change in characteristics of NBR was investigated after exposure to high-pressure hydrogen to NBR vulcanizates. According to the increase of filler content, the performance of NBR vulcanizates generally increased and HAF carbon black filler and silica filler had an excellent performance than MT carbon black filler. After exposure to high-pressure hydrogen, the characteristic of NBR vulcanizates decreased but the degree of decrease was different. In the case of high filler content and addition with HAF carbon black filler and silica filler, the change of characteristics of NBR was lower. After the RGD test, the O-ring was cut and the section of the O-ring was investigated to evaluate the resistance to high-pressure hydrogen. Similar to the result of NBR vulcanizates after exposure to high-pressure hydrogen, the O-ring with high filler content and HAF carbon black filler and silica filler showed excellent resistance to high-pressure hydrogen than MT carbon black filler. Therefore, it is beneficial to increase the filler content in rubber materials to have high durability against high-pressure hydrogen. It is possible to determine whether it is a rubber material that can be used in a high-pressure hydrogen environment through the evaluation of the effect of high-pressure hydrogen on rubber material.
