106382 - Effect of Welding Parameters and Post Weld Heat Treatment Conditions on Mechanical Properties of 3.5% Ni Steel Weld Metal
3.5% Ni steel has excellent combination of strength and low temperature properties and being widely used in application with temperature up to -100 0C. This steel possesses good weldability. When used in equipment manufactured as per ASME Sec VIII, it requires Post Weld Heat treatment (PWHT). Based on size of equipment and manufacturing sequence, base and weld metal may undergo multiple PWHT cycles during fabrication of equipment. Very limited information is available on weld metal mechanical properties in different PWHT conditions.
The present investigation has been carried out to study the effect of welding parameters and post-weld heat treatment conditions on the mechanical properties of this steel. Welded test plates were made using two different welding processes, viz., Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and with two different heat input values in each. Welded test plates were subjected to PWHT at temperature recommended by ASME with three different holding times. Tensile test, Impact test, bend test and hardness test and microstructure analysis were done in the as-welded and all three post-weld heat treatment conditions.
Results of mechanical tests were compared and were analyzed to understand impact of welding parameters and post-weld heat treatment for both Welding Processes.
