86019 - Technical Basis of the Code Case Providing Design Rules for the Use of Polyethylene Pipe for Class 3 ASME BPVC Section III, Division 1 Above Ground Piping Systems
Section III, Mandatory Appendix XXVI provides rules for buried High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Pipe for service water or cooling water piping systems. Section III has recently developed rules for above ground High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems in a Code Case that was published with the 2019 edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. This paper presents the technical basis of this above ground High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping Code Case. It provides the background on the development of the rules for above ground High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems. The authors completed extensive material testing over last 10 years to build the foundation of the Code Case rules. In addition, the historical background of the testing is given to provide the basis for the stress limits in the above ground case and the stress intensification factors. This paper will also explain the considerations for the selection of a dynamic load factor, the capacity of bolted flanged connections, and the considerations of buckling, which unlike buried pipe apply to above ground piping systems. A complete history and technical background for the basis of the above ground High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) code case rules will be presented in this paper
Presenting Author: Timothy Adams Jensen Hughes
Presenting Author Biography: Mr. Adams is a Engineer in the Independence Ohio Office of Jensen Hughes. He has over 45 years of experience in the design of pressure retaining components to Section III and Section VIII of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the ASME B31 and NM series Piping Codes. Mr. Adams has extensive experience and knowledge in the areas of design, seismic design, analysis, construction, and inspection of piping systems; pressure vessels and tanks; mechanical equipment; support structures; and the application of industry consensus codes and standards for the electric power generation, petrochemical and process industries, and DOE nuclear waste processing facilities. He is an industry expert on the seismic design of piping systems and mechanical components. He is active in numerous ASME consensus code and standards committees that pertain to the design, construction, and qualification of mechanical and pressure retaining components. He is the recipient of numerous ASME Awards including the 2017 ASME BPVC Section III, “SC-III Outstanding Service Award”, the 2020 ASME – QME Committee, “QME Outstanding Service Award” and the ASME 2021 “B.F. Langer Nuclear Codes and & Standards Award”
