62137 - Study on the Acoustic Attenuation Law of Polyethylene
With the increasing application of polyethylene (PE) pipeline, its corresponding nondestructive testing method has been a hot topic. Ultrasonic testing is one of the most attractive techniques for the non-destructive testing for PE pipes. The large acoustic attenuation characteristic of PE is the main between PE pipe and metallic pipe when applying ultrasonic testing, and is also one of the main factors limiting the scope of ultrasonic testing on PE. It is generally considered that the acoustic attenuation coefficient of the material is a constant under a specific detection frequency when the external environment is determined. However, we found that the acoustic attenuation coefficient of PE decreased with the increase of the thickness of the test block, when we used the detection frequency of 2.5MHz, 4.0MHz, 5.0MHz and 7.5MHZz respectively to detect the PE test block with uniform thickness from 5mm to 50mm. It was also found that the main frequency of the signal would gradually move to the low frequency with the increase of the transmission distance. The influence of the main frequency and transmission distance on the acoustic attenuation coefficient were further studied in detail. The research content has a certain role in promoting the application of ultrasonic testing in PE pipeline.
