61359 - Results of Round Robin Tests for Qualifying Hydrogen Compatibility of Materials – Contribution of Kriss
The experimental methods for qualifying hydrogen compatibility of materials have not yet been standardized and the expertise of performing the tests has been restricted to few laboratories. Within the international coordination to establish a code of practice, the Korean research team (KRISS) is cooperating in a round-robin exercise in order to contribute to the process of establishing the test method. This study describes these our current round-robin activities and some obtained results. The experimental campaign includes the slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) and notched fatigue life test on a SUS316L grade austenitic stainless steel which has been widely using in the structural components of the hydrogen service. The sub-sized tensile specimens were machined from a bar with a gauge diameter of 4 mm and a parallel path length of 20 mm. A constant crosshead speed of 0.0008 mm/s was applied in the test with the SSRT test. A notched specimen with specific dimensions of a notch angle of 60-degree, a notch radius of 0.12 mm, and a net-section diameter of 4 mm were prepared for the notched fatigue life test. The net-section stress at maximum load (Smax) in the notched specimen was 444 MPa and tension-tension loading condition with the loading ratio of R = 0.1. The tests were performed under a temperature of 233K at two environmental conditions: high-pressure hydrogen of 99 MPa and a nitrogen gas of 0.1 MPa (three tests at each condition). Based on the obtained results, detailed comparison and discussions on the consistency of the experimental results among laboratories with the distinct testing system are made.
