61169 - Overview of Revisions to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 3 for the 2021 Edition and Near Future 

This paper provides an overview of the significant revisions to the upcoming 2021 edition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII Division 3, Alternative Rules for Construction of High Pressure Vessels, as well as potential changes to future editions under consideration of the Subgroup on High Pressure Vessels (SG-HPV).

In the 1960s and early 1970s the demand for pressure vessels for pressures up to 165 ksi (1135 MPa) used in the chemical industry, for isostatic pressing of metal and ceramic powders, and for other purposes greatly increased. Later applications such as for the food processing industry, and water jet applications for cutting and cleaning, continued to fuel the need for development in the area of high pressure vessels.  It is practicable to design such vessels in accordance with ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 and 2, Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels, up to about 30 ksi (205 MPa) but not for higher pressures; thus the high pressure vessel Code, was conceived.

The initial work on this division was started in 1980 and completed upon the publication of ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 3 in 1997. From the initial issuance, there have been additional advancements that occurred in the industries that use Section VIII Division 3 and from other industries that started using the Division.

Many of the new developments and significant corrections being incorporated into the 2021 edition of Section VIII Division 3 are summarized in the paper. These new developments were based on feedback from the ASME BPVC user community and input from regulator and standards development groups.
