61410 - A Study on Fluid-elastic Instability of Tube Array with Different Stiffness Asymmetry in Cross Flow
The fluid-elastic instability is probably to occur in both transverse and streamwise directions. The studies of streamwise instability are mainly performed with the tubes fixed in the transverse direction, which may not happen in the practical tube bundles. Although the tube stiffness can be different in the two direction, the one-direction FEI tests can be not persuasive enough. In this study, the effect of the transverse vibration of tubes on the streamwise instability was investigated through water tunnel tests and numerical simulations. The vibration was controlled by changing the stuffiness of tubes in the two directions. The results show that the streamwise instability the vibration in the transverse direction can affect the streamwise instability threshold, and the streamwise vibration was suppressed when the tubes fall into instability in transverse direction. The typically instability in the streamwise direction cannot be observed in water flow, the displacement become lower after a rapid increasing trend, which is different from the result of the one direction experiment results. The instability is transformed from the streamwise trend to the transverse. The asymmetry of the tube stiffness can have an effect on the transformation between streamwise and transverse instability, especially when the ratio of transverse to streamwise stiffness is higher than 4.
