61676 - Application of Load Release Factor Method in Thermal Expansion Load Imposed on Vessel Nozzle
Abstract: Thermal expansion of the pipeline will result in additional load on the nozzle of pressure vessel connecting with them. The analysis and evaluation of the local stress caused by this additional load at the root of the vessel nozzle is a complex issue. In this paper, several analysis methods for thermal expansion load and stress are introduced. Taking a system composed of spherical head with a central nozzle and certain external pipeline as an example, comparative analysis and research are carried out by using the atomistic method (stress classification and limit load), the holistic method and the Elastic Release Factor Method (ERFM) respectively. The results show that the traditional atomistic method is excessively conservative for structure design. The results of the holistic method are the most consistent with the actual situation, but there are some disadvantages in dealing with practical problems, such as large amount of calculation and inconvenient for engineering application. Compared with the atomistic method, ERFM can not only ensure the reliability of the results, but also can reduce the conservative amount and then manufacturing cost, as for the holistic method, the calculation amount of the ERFM is reduced, which makes it more applicable for the engineering practice. Therefore, the ERFM can be used as a reference method to deal with the additional load caused by thermal expansion of pipeline in the stress analysis of vessels.
